Tal Blumstein is an Israeli pianist and composer, whose love for the piano started at an early age and which soon turned into a great interest for improvisation and the world of jazz. He studied at the prestigious Thelma Yellin School for the Arts and after a few months joined the Israeli Defense Forces Orchestra as a lead-pianist. He pursued his studies at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York, from which he graduated as valedictorian. While in the States, he met up with childhood friends, Max Oleartchik on bass and Itay Morchi on drums, who were already active on the local jazz scene and who had been performing themselves on numerous occasions with established musicians, such as Gadi Lehavi (who now performs with Eli Degibri) and Avichai Ornoy to name a few.

Tal Blumstein Trio is the debut album by the trio of the same name which they released in May 2014. The album includes a set of seven original compositions, which are intimate narratives inspired by the years the trio spent together in New York.

Superbly backed up by Max Oleartchik’s deep and warm bass and Itay Morchi’s on-the-edge drums, pianist Tal Blumstein freely alternates between tranquil and soothing ballads to more spirited pieces. The trio’s interplay is impressive and sounds effortless. The melodies are all performed with perfect control and not overdone with technical gymnastics, which reveal a certain maturity which transcends their young age. The use of space and harmony contained in each piece are both eloquent and stirring and definitely evoke modern elements of jazz, though Tal’s mellow, and yet assertive, singing adds a Middle Eastern resonance to the set.

For a first album, this trio deserves great attention.
